How to add multiple domains to my web hosting

Adding on multiple domain names to your web hosting account is a very simple task and also very convenient. There are a number of reasons why you may need to do this. Often times, you may have 2 or 3 websites and don’t want to buy 3 separate hosting accounts. Adding on multiple domain names is a great way to help you save money on the cost of your web hosting (since you don’t have to sign up for multiple accounts). Not every web host allows you to do this. This is why I recommend you read our professional reviews first before you buy any web hosting plan.

So once you get a web hosting  company that will allow you to add on multiple domains, you can get started! Each web host may be a little different, but the steps should be similar. I’m going to walk you through the steps for adding on a domain with HostMonster because that is the best web host I would recommend.

First Step, login to your cPanel. Cpanel is your web hosting’s backend control panel. Again not every webhost may have cPanel. Step 2, scroll down to the domains category.  Step 3, click on Addon Domains. Step 4, follow the easy to use instructions that cPanel provides. Here you will basically just type in the new name of the domain you would like to add on to your web hosting account. For the first option, you may need to choose a domain that is not already listed with your account. You may be given the option to have an addon or parked domain. Choose addon. If it asks you for a directory, usually leave that blank as the web host will pick the best spot for you. But feel free to change it if you have a better spot in mind.

Review of the Yahoo Web Hosting Control Panel

Yahoo web hosting provides its own unique control panel. As we mentioned in an earlier article, the most common control panel for most web hosts in the well known and respected cPanel. While cPanel offers everything you will need in your control panel, Yahoo Small Business created their own simplified control panel.

Logging into your Yahoo small business account, you will see that their web hosting account is much more simpler than cPanel or other various forms of control panels. The first thing you’ll notice is the simple layout. There 7 tabs which allow you to carry out the most common tasks you may need in your web hosting. The first tab, the “home” tab, allows you to view your daily site traffic. This is handy as it allows you to view how many people each day, week, or month are visiting your website. On the bottom of the screen, there is also a keyword option where you type in a search engine keyword and Yahoo will tell you how well you are ranking for it. I suppose this can be handy for most non-technological users.

The second tab, the “email” tab, allows you to set up all of your email accounts. As of the time of this writing, Yahoo small business webhosting allows you to have upto 1000 email accounts.  The next tab, “create and update” gives you multiple options you may need to use for your web hosting. For example, on this tab, you can use their file management tools to upload files to your site, or easily install a prebuilt site from a yahoo template. These can be somewhat useful, though I would prefer using filezilla or some other FTP to manage the files on the server.

The “management” tab allows you to use other tools on your webhosting account. It also provides valuable info for your ftp. This is the info you would use to connect your site to your FTP, like FileZilla. You can also change your yahoo small business service plan on this page.

The promote tab gives you useful information about ranking on search engines. Its always good to follow their advice as it will help people find your website more easily by searching on a search engine, such as Bing or Google.  The “help” tab is also very useful and can provide a lot of helpful information if you are not sure how to do a certain task in your web hosting control panel. The “index” tab provides more of a glossary type documentation on how to do pretty much any web hosting related task.

That’s pretty much the Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting control panel in a nutshell. Its very simplified and great for doing many simple things in your web hosting control panel. Though its fairly straight forward and easy to understand, I do wish Yahoo would switch to the preferred cPanel control panel that is a little better.

CPanel – The backend user interface of many Web Hosts

CPanel is the industry’s leading software for many web hosting providers. CPanel provides the back end user interface that allows the client to login to their webhosting account and set up all the features of their webhosting. CPanel is commonly used, but not every web host provider uses it. Some web hosts have their back end user interface, like Yahoo!. We recommend that you try to find a host that uses CPanel as it allows you to do many more things than most other Web Hosting User Interfaces.

A sample screen shot from cPanel.

CPanel may seem daunting at first when you first login. You will see many different options and menus, but don’t let this scare you. The options are neatly categorized under their appropriate menus. Spend 2 minutes of your time looking around CPanel, and you will quickly  understand the layout and how CPanel works. For the average user, you should have no problem logging in, finding out what settings you want to change and how to do it using CPanel. For example, if you want to add a domain name to your website, you would simply go to the Domains menu in CPanel and click addon Domain. As you see, its very easy to use.

CPanel can provide an easy to use interface for changing basic web hosting needs, but also provides advanced options for users as well. You can easily update scripts, install WordPress blogs, import/export MySQL databases, and more. Although CPanel is not desperately needed for the average user (as they probably will not be changing many settings in their web hosting account), we would still recommend it. Especially for those more advanced users who plant on hosting numerous websites, importing multiple domain names, etc. So to conclude, try to find a web hosting provider that uses CPanel. It’ll be worth it. You can check out our most recommended web hosts list here.
